AAGP President’s Letter, October 2026

Dear AAGP Members,

As we move into the last quarter of 2026 and enter fall and holiday season, I cannot help but reflect on the year thus far for AAGP. In doing so, I remain grateful for the people who make our organization such a welcoming and engaged community. This year, our membership exceeded 1,500 members. That milestone clearly reflects the strength of our physician and non-physician membership alike. Across clinical care, research, education, and training, each of you brings a valuable perspective to our shared commitment to improving mental health care for older adults.

We are launching updated membership categories for the 2027 renewal cycle that clearly reflect the diverse professional backgrounds represented within AAGP. This is a part of our intentional effort to make sure members find a place in the association that aligns well with their work and career stage. As you plan for the year ahead, I hope you will renew your membership for 2027 and invite a colleague to join us.

There is much to look forward to next spring. The 2027 AAGP Annual Meeting will take place April 16–19 in San Diego. Our theme, Connecting and Collaborating to Advance Geriatric Mental Health, reflects what makes this gathering so meaningful: the opportunity to learn from colleagues across disciplines and career stages, share new research and practical ideas, and strengthen the relationships that support our work throughout the year. Whether you have attended for years or this will be your first AAGP meeting, I hope you will join us. Don’t forget to register and make plans to be part of the conversation in San Diego.

The connections we make at the Annual Meeting should continue throughout the year. To support that, AAGP is working toward a new and engaging member connectivity[SS1.1] platform that will help members find one another, take part in group discussions, share perspectives and collaborate, and stay engaged in the work of our organization . We are also developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) special interest group to bring together members with interest in emerging uses of AI and implications for geriatric mental health. I look forward to sharing more about these opportunities in the months ahead.

AAGP is strongest when members with a range of experiences and perspectives help guide its future. When the 2027 Board election ballot opens later this year, I encourage you to take a few minutes to vote. Elections are a critical step in shaping our organizations continued direction and trajectory. There are also many ways to become more involved throughout the year. Serving on a committee is an opportunity to contribute your expertise, build relationships across our organization, and gain experience that may lead to a future leadership role. I hope you will consider where you might like to get involved.

Thank you for the care and expertise you bring to AAGP and to the older adults we serve. As we look toward a new year, I hope you will find new ways to connect with colleagues, share your perspective, and help shape the future of AAGP.

Warmly,
Shilpa Srinivasan, MD, DFAAGP, DFAPA
President, AAGP
