The Neuroscience of Resilience Program Co-Chairs: Olivia I. Okereke, MD, MS Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA Julie Dumas, PhD University of Vermont Program Description Neuroscience Teaching Day is a ½-day educational program on the morning before AAGP starts. The 2023 program focuses on the neuroscience of resilience and its importance in geriatric psychiatry. There is a growing awareness of the critical role of the resilience in aging with regard to better cognitive, behavioral and well-being outcomes in later life. Integration of concepts in the biology and neuroscience into our understanding of patients’ resilience and potential enhance resilience in aging will be increasingly important in the practice of geriatric psychiatry. This program features three 45-minute expert presentations and a panel discussion. These cutting-edge presentations will address three themes in the neuroscience of resilience: 1) the experience of wisdom in aging, its neurobiological basis and contributions to resilience in aging, and potential modifiers of wisdom during aging; 2) the molecular and neural mechanisms of risk and resilience in geriatric depression and the role of biological aging markers in addressing relevant treatments and clinical outcomes; 3) the neuroscience of positivity in aging.
