AAGP Fellowships
The American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) Fellowship Programs recognize members who have demonstrated sustained contributions to the field of geriatric psychiatry and active engagement within the organization. The Fellow, Distinguished Fellow, and Future Leaders Fellowship designations honor individuals whose accomplishments reflect excellence in clinical care, education, research, administration, leadership, and service to AAGP and the mental health and well-being of older adults.
Overview
AAGP offers three Fellowship programs that recognize professional achievement, leadership, and service to the field of geriatric psychiatry: Fellow, Distinguished Fellow, and Future Leaders Fellow.
Fellows
AAGP Fellows are recognized for sustained contributions to geriatric psychiatry and active engagement within AAGP. Eligible candidates are Full Members in good standing for at least five consecutive years, have attended at least three AAGP Annual Meetings, and demonstrate excellence in areas such as clinical care, education, research, administration, leadership, and service.
Distinguished Fellows
AAGP Distinguished Fellows are recognized for exceptional achievement, sustained leadership, and significant contributions to geriatric psychiatry and AAGP. Eligible candidates are Full Members in good standing for at least ten consecutive years, have attended at least six AAGP Annual Meetings, and demonstrate distinguished accomplishments across multiple areas of professional service and leadership.
Future Leader Fellows
The AAGP Future Leaders Fellowship identifies and supports emerging leaders in geriatric psychiatry through mentorship, leadership development, and active participation in AAGP activities. Eligible candidates must be Full Members in good standing for at least five consecutive years, have attended at least five AAGP Annual Meetings, and demonstrate excellence in one or more areas of professional contribution.
AAGP Fellows and Distinguished Fellows
The AAGP Fellow and Distinguished Fellow designations recognize members who have demonstrated sustained contributions to the field of geriatric psychiatry and active engagement within the Association. These honors acknowledge excellence in clinical care, education, research, administration, leadership, and service to AAGP and the mental health and well-being of older adults.
Each year, applications are reviewed by the AAGP Membership Committee and approved by the AAGP Board of Directors. Recipients are formally recognized during the AAGP Annual Meeting Opening Plenary and receive a commemorative pin and certificate.
Fellow
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a full member in good standing of the AAGP for at least 5 consecutive years
- Have attended at least 3 AAGP Annual Meetings as a full member
- Demonstrate excellence in at least two of the five Evaluation Categories:
- Clinical Practice
- Teaching
- Administration
- Scientific/Scholarly Work
- AAGP Participation
- Be sponsored by two AAGP Full Members who submit letters of recommendation describing the applicant's contributions to the field and/or the organization.
- Attend the Opening Plenary at the annual meeting in order to be installed to Fellowship.

- Be sponsored by two AAGP Full Members who submit letters of recommendation describing the applicant's professional achievements and contributions.

How to Prepare Your Application
Describe your accomplishments and contributions within the Evaluation Categories section of the online application and include any additional information you would like the Membership Committee to consider during its review.
Upload your current curriculum vitae as part of your application materials.
Two AAGP Full Members must complete and submit the online reference form on your behalf.
Evaluation Criteria
Clinical Practice
Applicants may demonstrate clinical excellence through any two of the following:
- Clinical practice of geriatric psychiatry for at least 25% of your professional time
- Leadership of clinical services including chief/directorships
- Awards or citations for clinical activities
- Development of regionally or nationally recognized innovative clinical practices
- Membership of clinical practice committees of health care organizations, regional or national organizations or societies
Teaching
Applicants may demonstrate excellence in teaching through any two of the following:
- Undergraduate (medical school/nursing school/psychology/social work) education programs
- Graduate (residencies, fellowship, PhD, masters-preparation) education programs
- Continuing medical education or other medically related teaching
- Supervision at the graduate or postgraduate level
- Awards for teaching at undergraduate or post graduate programs
Administration
Applicants may demonstrate administrative leadership through one or more of the following:
- Administrative responsibilities for geriatric psychiatry services
- Other administrative positions related to geriatric psychiatry
- Awards or special recognition for administrative duties
Scientific and Scholarly Work
Applicants may demonstrate scholarly achievement through any two of the following:
- At least 5 publications in geriatric psychiatry in peer reviewed national or international journals
- At least 10 presentations on geriatric psychiatry topics at national meetings
- Grants for geriatric psychiatry
- Participation on journal editorial boards, grant review committees, practice guideline committees, etc.
- Awards for scholarly activities
AAGP Participation
Applicants may demonstrate engagement with AAGP through any two of the following:
- List AAGP activities (clinical, education, research, scholar’s program etc.)
- Committee assignments at the AAGP (at least 1)
- Officer or other positions held at the AAGP
- Awards or special recognition for participation at the AAGP
Applicants are encouraged to include any additional information or supporting materials that may assist the Membership Committee in evaluating their application.
AAGP Future Leader Fellows
The AAGP Future Leaders Fellowship is designed to identify, support, and develop emerging leaders within geriatric psychiatry and aging-related mental health disciplines. Each year, up to five AAGP members are selected based on their demonstrated contributions to the field, active engagement within AAGP, and potential for future leadership. Through mentorship, leadership development, and participation in AAGP governance and committee activities, Fellows gain valuable experience while contributing to the mission of AAGP.
The fellowship term runs for one year, from Annual Meeting to Annual Meeting, with recipients recognized during the AAGP Annual Meeting Opening Plenary.

- Demonstrate excellence in at least one of the five Evaluation Categories as reflected in your curriculum vitae and professional accomplishments.
- Be sponsored by one AAGP Full Member who submits a letter of recommendation describing the applicant's accomplishments, leadership potential, and contributions to the field and/or AAGP.
- Attend the Opening Plenary at the annual meeting in order to be installed as an AAGP Future Leaders Fellow.
